Background
The Agency for Empowerment of Pastoralists (AFEOP) specializes in applying Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) approaches to address some of the most pressing and complex challenges facing communities in Kenya and the East Africa region. Through participatory media and culturally responsive community-based interventions, we work to enhance livelihoods, promote health and education, address gender issues, strengthen resilience, and foster sustainable development among pastoralist populations.
Our change model is anchored in the following approaches:
Taking a family-based approach: AFEOP takes a family-centered approach to much of our programming. This includes producing programming for parents, schools and young children, and fostering intergenerational dialogue on community challenges and collective solutions
Elevating the Voice of Women and Girls: Through a focus on both social-emotional learning and capacity development, AFEOP develop empowering content for women and girls. The skills we focus on through our programming are tailored to the context, and include effective communication, empathy, critical thinking, creative thinking, decision making, and self-efficacy alongside leadership, public speaking, media engagement, advocacy and campaigns.
Promoting Positive Social & Gender Norms: When addressing social and behavioural change AFEOP looks first at issues of power, agency and dynamics within families, communities, and social structures – shifting our focus from the individual to the contextual factors that impact the lives of women and girls and approaching programme design through a socio-ecological lens.
Use of Media & Technology: making media accessible and participatory is a core element of our interventions. We use traditional and social media as well as accessible technologies such as IVR to elevate citizens’ issues and make sure the most marginalized voices are heard.
Learning and Adapting: Adaptability is central to our program approach. We use survey data, evaluation tools, reflection meetings, in-depth interviews, community, and facilitator feedback, and research data to continuously evaluate and improve our programmes. By creating real-time learning and feedback mechanisms, we design iteratively and adapt as necessary to achieve our goals.
Project Overview
The ‘What Works to Prevent Violence – Impact at Scale’ Programme is a seven-year initiative funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) that aims to expand effective interventions to prevent Gender Based Violence (GBV).
